The subcutaneous and intramuscular routes of administration are another option
for parenteral drug delivery. In the case of poorly soluble compounds, the
SupraVail® Membrane Lipid Matrix formulations represent a particularly
attractive strategy for delivering drugs.
The phospholipids used in the SupraVail® Membrane Lipid Matrix are well-tolerated
in s.c. and i.m. applications, and similar to their use in oral, intravenous
and topical applications, they have the ability to solubilize hydrophobic
and lipophilic compounds. By preventing precipitation of the active, they
also promote local tolerability by avoiding the irritation caused by precipitated
drug crystals.
Finally, depending on the membrane transfer properties of the molecule and
the exact composition of the formulation, the release rate of drug from the
depot can be rapid or take place over a longer period.
